Report: Coventry City U23s 2 Hull City U23s 0
Hull City U23s were beaten 2-0 by Coventry City at the Alan Higgs Centre on Monday afternoon.
Trialist striker James Berry featured for City as Jon Beale made four changes to the side that recorded an impressive victory at Crystal Palace. Jake Leake, Harvey Carew and Jay Rouse also came into the starting eleven with Elliot Bonds, Tyler Hamilton, Billy Chadwick and Alhagi Sisay missing out. Against a strong Coventry City side, the Tigers included six first-year scholars in their sixteen-man squad.
Coventry made the early running and could have been ahead within a minute of the kick-off. Amadou Bakayoko’s shot beat Charlie Andrew but Matty Jacob was well placed to clear the danger.
The Tigers’ first chance fell to Ryan Hanson but his header was easily held by Sky Blues keeper Tom Billson.
The hosts went ahead in the 14th minute when Max Biamou won the ball in the Tigers' half and unleashed a superb left-foot strike which flew past Andrew and high into the net.
Andrew had to react quickly when Declan Drysdale’s low shot took a huge deflection, the Tigers' keeper scrambling across his line to push the ball around the post for a corner.
Jon Beale was forced into an early change in the 17th minute with McCauley Snelgrove replacing Rouse, but it was the host who continued to press as Bakayoko’s shot on the turn was on target but straight at Andrew.
The Tigers went close to levelling the score just before the break when Berry broke into the box but his right foot strike was turned away for a corner by Billson.
Andrew made a save from Charlie Wakefield early in the second period whilst, at the other end, Billson easily saved from Berry.
Substitute Will Jarvis and Berry then combined to create a chance for Ahmed Salam but the winger couldn’t direct his shot on target before Bapaga was off target with a curling effort.
The Sky Blues doubled their lead with a little under 15 minutes remaining. Substitute David Bremang collected the ball outside the Tigers' box and his fiercely struck shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down into the net.
A great block from Hanson denied Bremang a second goal and the Tigers came close to consolation effort in added time but Jarvis’ left-foot shot was well tipped over by Billson.
