Young Tigers Suffer Defeat In Pre-Season Opener

Young Tigers Suffer Defeat In Pre-Season Opener

The Tigers relinquished their hold of the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy when a mixed U23s/U18s side were beaten 3-1 by North Ferriby United at the Eon Visual Media Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Recent signings James Yates and Tom Powell both began for the Tigers, but fellow new arrival Liam Edwards sat out the first half. With several of the Under-23 squad away in Portugal with the first team, Jon Beale also called upon players from the Under-18s set-up.

Beale's side were almost ahead in the opening seconds when Tyler Hamilton crossed from the right but Ahmed Salam fired his shot wide of the post from the edge of the box.

Ferriby's first chance fell to Curtis Bateson but his curling effort was off target and failed to test Charlie Andrew. Joel Ambula created a good chance for former Tiger Simon Russell, who fired over the crossbar and although he claimed a corner the referee awarded a goal kick.

Tom Dyson forced a comfortable save from Ferriby keeper Ross Durrant just prior to the half hour mark, before the hosts had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring. Bateson went through on goal but managed to get the ball stuck between his feet as Dyson forced him wide. The Ferriby man didn’t give up though and rifled a shot on goal only for City defender Lewis Ritson to produce a fine block, before the danger ended when Andrew saved Ambula’s shot.

The hosts did break the deadlock in the 29th minute when Joe Pugh’s pull-back was controlled by Ambula, who then rifled a shot past Andrew and into the back of the net.

The Tigers were almost level within a couple of minutes of the restart but, when Ferriby failed to clear Will Annan's corner, Jacob Greaves was unlucky to see his superb curling effort come back off the cross bar and into the arms of Durrant.

The first half continued its seesaw nature when Salam cleared a header off City’s line, with the Tigers’ Tom Powell then having his shot saved by Durrant, who raced out to block the chance.

Bateson fired wide for Ferriby and Andrew easily held Russell's tame effort before the Tigers were level in the 42nd minute. Durrant did well to deny Powell and Salam's follow up was blocked on the line by Mark Gray, but the ball fell to Annan who made no mistake from inside the box to level the scores.

There were substitutions aplenty during the break with the Tigers making seven and Ferriby two.

Beale’s side had a great chance in the opening stages of the second period but Ben Hinchliffe fired over the bar from Powell's pull-back. It was then Ferriby’s turn to be wasteful in front of goal as Alberto was off target with a close-range header before Russell fired over.

The Tigers had a lucky escape when Alberto saw his low shot come back off the post and into the arms of Harrison Folks, who replaced Andrew between the posts at the break.

Billy Chadwick was off target with a right foot shot for Beale's side before the Villagers regained the lead 13 minutes from time. Foulkes produced a great save to keep out Russell's header but Ferriby recycled the ball and former Tiger Danny Emerton fired a low strike into the back of the net.

Charlie Dunkerley curled an effort over the bar for the Tigers as they went in search of an equaliser, but Ferriby increased their lead just three minutes after regaining the lead. Emerton’s pass released Alberto, with the striker producing a fine finish to find the bottom corner.

The Tigers almost reduced the deficit but Chadwick's effort was cleared off the line by Jake Skelton as North Ferriby regained the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy.
