U23s Report: The Tigers 2 Coventry City 1
Goals from Greg Olley and Greg Luer helped the Under-23s to a second successive 2-1 victory as they overcame Coventry City at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday evening.
Luer was one of two changes to the side that started the game at Cardiff earlier in the week as he replaced Tom Powell. The other change saw James Weir come in for Ben Hinchliffe.
It was a quiet start to the game as far as goal scoring chances were concerned. Josh Eccles saw his shot deflected for a corner for the visitors whilst at the other end Weir’s shot was pushed away by Coventry keeper Cory Addai after Will Annan and Olley had helped create the chance.
A long clearance from Callum Burton was latched upon by Luer but his deflected effort was pushed away by Addai before the Tigers took a 22nd minute lead. Tyler Hamilton and James Yates combined down the right and from the full back’s cross Olley’s left foot volley was deflected onto the crossbar but the rebound fell back to him to make no mistake with the second volley.
Bilal Sayoud sent a left-foot shot high and wide from the edge of the box for Coventry but City went close to adding to their lead just before the break as Olley’s pass sent Luer through but Addai was quickly off his line to block.
Coventry had a great chance to level at the start of the second period but Burton made a good save to deny Morgan Crowther who was on the end of a cross from the left.
A good run from Hamilton released Luer and although he rounded Addai he fired into the side-netting from an acute angle. Weir then created a chance for himself with a good run but he fired just wide from the edge of the box.
The Tigers doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Annan’s shot was pushed out by Addai but only as far as Luer who fired in the rebound from close range.
Weir then fired over from a Yates cross before Burton produced a great save to tip Chris Camwell’s free-kick onto the crossbar.
Luer could have secured the three points when a met a cross from the left from substitute Hinchliffe but Addai blocked and Coventry got themselves back in the game as they pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining. A corner was played into the near post and Crowther rifled a right foot shot past Burton.
However, the Tigers held on for their second win of the season despite Weir being sent-off in injury time after reacting to a bad challenge.
