U23s Report: Crystal Palace 3 The Tigers 0
The Under-23s ended their Professional Development League campaign with a 3-0 defeat away at Crystal Palace on Thursday afternoon.
Goals either side of half-time from Levi Lumeka and James Daly put the Eagles in control before Lumeka added his second of the game late on to complete the scoring at Selhurst Park.
The Tigers started brightly and came close to opening the scoring twice in the space of 30 seconds in the 17th minute as Joe Tupper denied Liam Edwards from distance before keeping out Greg Olley's attempted lob.
But it was the Eagles who broke the deadlock just three minutes later with their first attempt of the game. A short corner routine involving Jason Lokilo and Daly allowed the latter to whip a cross into a dangerous area, and after Olley miscued his clearance, Lumeka was on hand to nod home from a yard out.
Tom Powell wasted a glorious opportunity to level the scores before tiebreak after being played in by Olley, but the diminutive striker fired wide of the far post. And seconds before half-time Palace could have doubled their lead when Jason Lokilo saw his superb curling effort come back off the crossbar.
The Eagles did manage t double their lead on the hour mark - albeit in fortunate circumstances. Harrison Foulkes produces a superb one-handed save to keep out Lumeka's initial effort, but was powerless to prevent Daly from slotting home the rebound.
Edwards almost pulled a goal back for Jon Beale's side after showing good strength to dispossess Jaros?aw Jach inside the Palace half. The Welshman advanced into the box before looking to find the bottom corner with a low effort - only to see the ball drift agonisingly wide.
However, it was the hosts had the final say as they made it 3-0 in the final minute of normal time. Jach's header from a right-wing corner was superbly kept out by Foulkes once again, but the ball rebounded off the post and fell perfectly to Lumeka to head home his 15th goal of the season.
